Constructing portable furnaces

Two weeks ago I built these two portable furnaces, designed to be placed in the trunk of my car. THey survived a 1200 km trip to Bochum in Germany and a two day iron smelting seminar with school children at the LWL Historisches Museum in Herne without a scratch! They’re made of a supportive frame of construction steel clad in mink cage steel wire mesh and covered in a clay – sand – horse manure mix. In this gallery you can see in detail how the fornaces are constructed.

Iron ore hunting

Yesterday I went ore hunting in the meadows and forests of western Jutland. First I got almost a trailer full of ore from my old faithful ore deposit just north of Esbjerg, just about 40 km’s from home. Later I got about half a trialer of rock ore from a new location in Varminglund Plantage I didn’t know about until recently. The fist sized ore nuggets lay in a pile of rocks in the far end of a field. It turned out to be of very fine quality, but unfortunately there wasn’t very much of it. According to some local friends there’s more in the region, so I’ll just have to keep sniffing around. The photos below are all from ore location #1, since I forgot to bring my camera to the new location.

Got work at the Hjemsted iron age village!

About a week ago I was offered a full time job as blacksmith and iron smelter at the local Hjemsted Oldtidspark iron age heritage center. I didn’t apply for it, the new manager just called me and asked if I wanted it, because he’d heard I was good. So, for the next four months I’ll be smelting iron and forging tools and weapons in their historical smithy!

I had my first day at the new job three days ago. There aren’t a lot of visitors yet because it’s still early summer season, so I’ve spent most of the time gathering tools, furniture and all sorts of goods and materials that I’ll be needing in the smithy. I’ll be posting photos and updates on my work as soon as all the practical stuff is has been done.
